An introduction to the elements of fiction: plot, character, setting, theme, point of view, conflict, and tone. Early classes consist of close readings of short fiction; students must read selected stories and confidently discuss fictional elements in a conversational setting.

Students in this class must complete weekly readings; these selected stories may be challenging; therefore students must apply considerable time and effort outside of class.

Students will also complete a number of short story exercises, which will be evaluated both on accuracy and consideration of the elements of fiction.
