This course introduces modeling and analysis of structural elements subjected to gravity and lateral loads. Analysis of statically determinate structures is emphasized. Students learn to evaluate internal forces and deflection. Topics covered include introduction to structural theory; Internal forces in beams; statically determinate trusses and rigid frames in two-dimensions; statically determinate trusses in three-dimensions; arches and cables; graphic statics; influence lines for statically determinate structures; deflections of statically determinate structures by strain energy, virtual work methods, moment-area method, and conjugate beam method.
