รายวิชานี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อให้ความรู้ภูมิหลังทางประวัติศาสตร์ ปรัชญา สังคม และวัฒนธรรมของวรรณคดีอังกฤษและอเมริกัน ตั้งแต่สมัยแองโกล-แซ็กซอนและยุคอาณานิคมจนถึงศตวรรษที่ 20 นักศึกษาจะได้ศึกษาเกี่ยวกับนักเขียนคนสำคัญและผลงานที่เป็นตัวแทนซึ่งนำเสนอขบวนการทางวรรณกรรมที่โดดเด่น โดยเน้นที่ลักษณะ องค์ประกอบ เนื้อหา เทคนิค และคุณค่าที่มีส่วนสนับสนุน และมีอิทธิพลต่อพัฒนาการและวิวัฒนาการของวรรณคดีแม่แบบของสหราชอาณาจักรและสหรัฐอเมริกา เมื่อสิ้นสุดรายวิชา คาดว่านักศึกษาจะสามารถอธิบายภูมิหลังโดยภาพรวมของวรรณคดีอังกฤษและอเมริกัน วิเคราะห์และวิพากษ์วิจารณ์บทอ่านที่คัดสรร และพัฒนาการอภิปรายและการโต้ตอบเชิงวิพากษ์ในบริบทต่างๆ วิชานี้สร้างพื้นฐานความเข้าใจแก่นักศึกษาสำหรับการศึกษาวรรณคดีอังกฤษต่อไป และเตรียมความพร้อมให้นักศึกษามีส่วนร่วมอย่างมีวิจารณญาณกับมรดกทางวรรณกรรม |

This course aims to provide the historical, philosophical, social, and cultural background to British and American literature from the Anglo-Saxon period and the Colonial period to the twentieth century. Students will study about major writers and their representative works representing prominent literary movements, with an emphasis on characteristics, elements, contents, techniques, and values that have contributed to and influenced the development and evolution of the literary canon of the United Kingdom and the United States. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to explain an overview of backgrounds of British and American literature, analyze and criticize selected literary works, and develop discussions and critical responses in various contexts. The course offers students a comprehensive foundation for further studies in English literature and prepares them to engage critically with the rich literary heritage. |
2. Course Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- identify major periods and movements in British and American literature;
- explain the historical, social, cultural, and philosophical backgrounds of selected literary works;
- analyze basic literary elements, themes, and techniques in poetry, drama, and fiction;
- discuss and respond critically to literary texts using appropriate literary concepts and terminology; and
- demonstrate an awareness of the development and evolution of British and American literary traditions.

รายวิชานี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาวรรณกรรมโดดเด่นที่เขียนหรือแปลเป็นภาษาอังกฤษโดยนักเขียนจากประเทศต่างๆ นอกเหนือจากสหราชอาณาจักรและสหรัฐอเมริกา ตั้งแต่ครึ่งหลังของศตวรรษที่ 20 จนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยเน้นขนบทางวรรณกรรม องค์ประกอบสำคัญ และแก่นเรื่องที่เป็นสากล ตลอดจนบริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ สังคม และวัฒนธรรม และแนวคิดสำคัญของวรรณกรรมโลก นักศึกษาจะได้เรียนรู้การพัฒนาการตีความ การวิเคราะห์ และการวิจารณ์ผลงานที่เลือกสรรจากมุมมองที่หลากหลาย วิชานี้เปิดโอกาสให้นักศึกษาได้ขยายขอบเขตวรรณกรรมของตนและเพิ่มความเข้าใจให้ลึกซึ้งยิ่งขึ้นเกี่ยวกับความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างประสบการณ์ของมนุษย์ผ่านงานเขียน โดยส่งเสริมการคิดเชิงวิพากษ์ ความตระหนักรู้ทางวัฒนธรรม และความซาบซึ้งต่อการมีส่วนร่วมระดับโลกต่อโลกแห่งวรรณกรรม
This course aims to study notable literary works written in English by authors from various nations other than Britain and the United States from the second half of the twentieth century (1951) up to the present (2026) with an emphasis on literary traditions, essential elements, and universal themes, as well as historical, social and cultural contexts and key concepts of world literature. Students will learn to develop interpretation, analysis and criticism of selected works from diverse perspectives. The course offers students the opportunity to broaden their literary horizons and deepen their understanding of the interconnectedness of human experiences through the written word. It encourages critical thinking, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for the global contributions to the world of literature.
Studies of current popular novels, examination of how authors use language to create different effects, investigation of the ways that literary text structure and use language, exploration of tools from linguistics and stylistics to analyze aspects of novel texts: figure of speech, discourse structure, style, pragmatic strategies and varieties of English
British and American fictions that demonstrate major social forces, significant intellectual trends and important literary movements in literature written in English
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
· Explain an overview of historical backgrounds of British and American fiction;
· Analyze and criticize literary texts by relating prominent literary movements to selected short stories;
· Develop discussions and critical responses on British and American fiction in various contexts.
