This course primarily aims at helping students be able to compose a brief speech and to conduct a simple 5-minute presentation.  However, because of the students’ weak background knowledge in English, it is highly necessary to provide the students with a fair amount of time to do the review of basic English sentence structures first and then to practice writing different types of sentences in English.  At the completion of the review of the basics and the sentence writing practices, they will then be trained on the basic composition and presentation skills.  Finally, they will be tested on the introduced presentation skill.  In brief, the major foci of the course include the following:

1.      Pre-test (3 hours)

2.      Learning English sentences through a reading practice (3 hours)

3.      Review of basic English structures (4 hours),

4.      Practice of basic writing skills: sentence construction & short-text composition (3 hours),

5.      Practice of writing a half-a-page presentation speech and editing (4 hours), and

6.      Presentation technique (1 hour)

7.      Conducting a final five-minute English presentation (Show & Tell[1]) (3 hours)

8.      Final test (3 hours)

[1] “Show and Tell” is an informal presentation of the presenter’s personal belonging or story  (i.e., pictures, books, compact disks, past events) s/he wants to show and talk about to the audience.
